Crews prepping Fountain City Lake for more maintenance

Crews are once again drawing down water levels at the Fountain City Lake in north Knoxville.

Last year, the city drained the lake to make repairs and keep it from leaking. They filled it up again to make sure the repairs worked.

Now, officials are preparing to survey the lake.

Last week, wildlife officials relocated 200 fish from the lake. Once they remove them all, crews can really start working.

"Then we can do things like draw it all the way down, start removing vegetation, get it really cleaned up, just like you could your fish aquariums. Sometimes you need to muck this stuff out, and the last time this was done was back in the 80s so it's time," said David Hagerman, City of Knoxville Stormwater Engineer.

The city says it will clean up all the algae and rock at the bottom of the lake and replace it with a natural habitat for the fish that can sustain itself.

After the cleanup, the Lions Club will continue to maintain the lake.
