McGhee Tyson Airport celebrates historic flight

McGhee Tyson Airport celebrated the 75th anniversary of the first commercial flight to land at its Blount County location Sunday.

According to airport spokesperson, Becky Huckaby, an American Airlines Stinson TriMotor traveled to the airport July 29, 1937.  She said it was capable of carrying 10 passengers.

Just 11 months into its opening, the Turkey Creek Public Market closed its doors to the public Sunday.

"It's been very profitable for us. We've also learned (a lot)," said Retta Gregg, who owns and works for local dried foods company Tennessee Tastes. It is just one of the hundreds of vendors at the West Knox County venue.

More than 450 vendors took advantage of the marketplace, following a two-year, $8 million renovation. The site was the former Outlet Mall.

East Tennessee Olympian Claire Donahue advances to 100 meter butterfly finals

Update: Donahue finished 5th in the semifinals with a time of 57.42. She has qualified for the finals that will take place Sunday.

LONDON - Being awakened by fireworks Friday night didn't disturb Claire Donahue this morning.

The 23-year-old from Lenoir City, Tenn., advanced to semifinals of the 100-meter butterfly at the Olympic Games. Donahue's time of 58.06 seconds ranks seventh out of the 16 swimmers who advanced.

Donahue, a Western Kentucky graduate, was sleeping in the Olympic Village until the sound of fireworks from the opening ceremony awakened her.

Grainger Co. Tomato Festival underway in Rutledge

Farmers arrived at the campus of Rutledge Elementary and Middle School long before sunrise Friday to begin setting up for the annual Grainger County Tomato Festival.

The festival officially got underway for the public at noon Friday when farmers and vendors began selling produce for the "early shopping" period.  The festival gets into full swing Friday night with live music at the Grainger County Opree.

The festival runs through late Sunday afternoon.

New fast casual restaurant opens in Bearden

Simple and fresh, that's the mission of a new restaurant in Knoxville.

Zoe's Kitchen opened Thursday in Bearden Hill.

The Alabama-based chain caters to people on-the-go and to families. The concept started in 1995 with the aim of offering fresh, fast casual food.

Zoe's Kitchen says it has an array of options.

"Salads, wraps, pitas, we have a phenomenal dinner menu with steak kabobs, salmon kabobs, chicken kabobs. We make our own hummus as an appetizer with free-squeezed lemon juice," said Tyre Stuckey.

Work almost finished on new Fulton High School football stadium

A Knox County high school is celebrating the addition of some of the final touches to its new stadium.

On Wednesday, crews installed the press box at the new Fulton High School football stadium.

The old stadium had to be demolished after last football season, due to structural defects. 

Some alumni came to watch the work and take pictures as the school gets ready for a new chapter in its football program.
