Tuesday marked a big milestone for one Knoxville church: a new bell tower was finally put in place thanks to the help of another congregation.

A crane lifted the bell tower on top of Shannondale Presbyterian Church on Tazewell Pike in north Knox County. In July, the church hosted a fundraising event to replace its bell tower that was 128 years old.

While the bell and the oak beams holding up the tower were fine, the tower itself was full of rotting wood.

"We had estimated around $38,000 to repair that tower, and these gentlemen have contributed their time and their expertise. And what we are paying for are the materials, and the people in the community have been most gracious," said Shannondale Presbyterian Church pastor Don Grady.

The pastor of Mount Harmony Baptist Church said his congregation enjoyed helping Shannondale Presbyterian and hopes it serves as an example of how churches can work together.
