A former teaching assistant at Halls Middle School has been charged with child abuse and assault, stemming from her behavior in the classroom.

Rebecca Shoemaker, 53, worked in a special education classroom.

According to a lawsuit filed in November, the investigation began in September after a complaint. The Knox County Sheriff's Office and Department of Children's Service went to the school to look into the allegations. Shoemaker resigned less than a week later.

The lawsuit, filed by the parents of a 14-year-old girl in Shoemaker's class, claimed that the aide "systematically and repeatedly physically and mentally abused" her. The parents said the girl needed medical attention after the abuse.

Shoemaker was charged with four counts of child abuse and two counts of assault
